I followed my own advice on this new house… I didn’t buy and fill it up immediately! I have taken my time and will continue to so that A. we don’t go broke and B. I get what I want the first time.  The family room was important to me though because it is obviously where we spend a lot of our time! Family room decor, and specifically mantle decorating has always been my nemesis though so it has taken some time.

This post will have some affiliate links to help you find products or similar ones but will mostly be picture heavy because it’s all still a work in progress! We wanted to keep our leather couch and chair but I did add two chairs that have worked out perfectly from Target.  I waited because I knew that they needed to match my true love… our new coffee table.  And they do and it’s glorious! I am a sucker for a spindle leg and repurposed my hutch from the old house and painted it a beautiful blue because the wood clashed with the floor.  It works for our media stand for now and adds a fun pop of color.

I will do a post soon on my DIY artwork above the mantle. It was a huge canvas with trees on it that I found at a flea market, but just wasn’t working for me in here so to save some moola, I decided to paint over it because it was a huge canvas and fit the space.  I was nervous because I didn’t want it to look like a child colored it 😉 but it brought in the colors I wanted and for now it makes me happy because I used the lake in the mountains where we scattered my mom’s ashes as inspiration.  I gotta keep her close to me!

So enough chit chat! Here are some quick pics of our family room that is open to our kitchen and opens out to our patio and pool.

/ Chairs / Stripe Lumbar Pillows /

/ Similar Animal Print Pillow (mine were from HomeGoods) / Coffee Table /

I love these chairs! They are comfortable and easy to move around when entertaining, not to mention a great price.  They are also a lower profile, which I wanted because I didn’t want them to block the pretty view outside when in front of the glass doors.

The rug and coffee table were big ticket items and to be completely transparent… aren’t my normal cost effective purchases.  But I planned and waited for sales and knew that these would both be large statement pieces that would be around for a very long time.  They were also very large and this room is fairly huge! The rug needed to be a 11 by 14 at least.

/ Chairs / Coffee Table / Rug / Similar Side Table /

The coffee table has had my heart for a very long time and y’all know that I tried to find a cheaper version for literally years!  But a good sale and a coupon code and I finally just pulled the trigger.  The details on it are gorgeous and it’s also ‘little boy’ friendly so it will last forever!

This room can be seen immediately when you enter our home so I wanted it to be both comfortable and pretty! And with no room in the budget for art, the DIY mantle painting and this little bow painting I did add just a bit of fun and color with all the blue and white. I plan on building out simple frames around both pieces.

And last but not least, this tiered side table was a clearance find that happened before we moved and I couldn’t resist it! It was $100 when I bought it and broke all of my self imposed rules of not buying something before it has a specific place and purpose… but it totally paid off!

Is it dangerous to have a glass topped anything in my house? Yes. But it has survived 7 months so we are just going to cross our fingers and hope she survives!

I hope you enjoyed this little peak into our family room and will update as we go! My absolute favorite thing about this room though? Is the peaceful view out back!

I will share our tips for building a pool and hopefully some new deck furniture soon!

xoxo

The entryway in our new home was a bit of a question mark for me at first.  It’s very long and with the hardwoods, it felt a bit dark, which I knew I needed to offset.  Initially I considered a gallery wall, but decided that it might feel a bit cluttered and wanted it to feel very clean and simple while still filling the very large space.  I’m not used to having such high ceilings and a lot of our old pictures are sizes that would get lost in the space, so I needed to look for larger scale pieces.

During the first few months I ordered this console table from Ballard Designs when it was on mega sale for $200.  The price was right and so was the length! It’s huge and bigger than most I was finding.  But that’s what the space needed! I was debating for quite awhile on what to put above it but finally decided on a mirror because it would bounce the light down the dark hallway and wouldn’t compete with artwork that would hang over the mantel.

After some failed trips to HomeGoods and my other fave home accessory places, I got a new Ballard Designs catalogue in the mail and wouldn’t you know it… the perfect mirror was in it! Once again, huge, but just enough detail to give it interest without being fussy! Check and check! The only problem… price… definitely more than I usually spend on something like this.  But if you sign up for there email list (once again, this is not a sponsored post) you will get emails with sales and I did just that and they finally had a 30% off coupon and I jumped on it.  This won’t be something I will replace for a long time and the quality of it showed when it arrived!

And by quality, I mean it was heavier than I could describe without using a cuss word and tested our marriage to the limit while we hung it lol! But worth it in the end!

And why don’t we just round out my Ballard Designs love fest with the final thing in the entry, my faux fiddle leaf fig tree! I have yet to find one of this quality and size for the price (also waited for a coupon and got it awhile ago).  It looks so real and I just found the pot for it at HomeGoods.  I can’t keep a plant or tree alive to save my life so this is actually saving me money in the long run.

Added in some of my blue and white pretties and voila! After 4 months we have a pretty, welcoming entryway! Do you like how I say voila and then 4 months later like it was overnight? Yeah… moving is a lot y’all.  Expenses and just figuring out what works in the new spaces takes patience and more patience, otherwise you end up buying a bunch of stuff that doesn’t really work.  Just ask our last house and the accessories that were in it for the first several years;)

If you have been around Windgate Lane for awhile, you know that these two pieces are more than I usually spend.  But with this new house and with 10yrs of design experience under my belt now, I knew where I would feel comfortable spending a bit more and that was on things that would be classic place holders.  The table and mirror will be there for a long time and my little accessory loving heart can decorate around them in all sorts of ways!

Each space is slowly coming together!

The stockings where hung, the presents were wrapped… then all hell broke loose and the only safe space was the dining room!

Similar Shirts | Wrapping Paper |

This year was very special because I got new dishes! I can remember my Mom getting special dishes on Christmas and I’m so excited to have my very own… and you won’t believe it but… they are blue and white! I know, you are shocked.  This Christmas Table Setting is my favorite and will be used for many years to come.

I feel these blue and white dishes were just meant to be in my home.  Just nod your head in agreement.   I might have needed the matching platter as well.  I mean it was all on sale (still is actually)!

The bowls are my favorite and I will keep them on display in my hutch.  They match my thrifted acrylic blue napkin holders perfectly!  I have thrifted most of my silver as well but you can find similar pieces here.   For other room sources, you can find them in the Dining Room Make-Over!

The Holiday Desert Plates, which are currently out of stock but could possibly come back, are another favorite, but these are an amazing second option (and on sale) and it was a hard choice between the two for me!

And how could I forget the bar cart?! It had to get prepped for some holiday entertaining!

The drink shakers were a black friday present to myself.  Stop judging.  I saved so much money on everyone else it just made sense.   And the antique drink stirrers are about my favorite holiday decor ever!

We are ready to have a beautiful dinner and then carry it into a Happy New Year and I wish the same to you all!

I don’t go big for Valentine’s Day decor, but with littles at home it can’t be ignored.  I try to just add in a few fun things to make it a bit festive! And this year I had some fun mixing my Thrift Store finds with my HomeGoods finds 🙂

ValentinesDay1

The silver vase and frame were HomeGoods finds! I love how a lot of their frames come with cute pictures already in them- it’s like buying two for one and this Lots of Love print was perfect for a little Valentine’s Day cheer.  Also if you missed my groundbreaking Dark Truth of HomeGoods post… you better check it out!

ValentinesDay4

I bought the little mister (for watering my fake plants) at Terrain.  They have the most beautiful things! They are also a huge source of inspiration for me, especially with all of there natural decor.  I threw together the little succulents to add some greenery to the mantel and start the transition into spring since we have apparently skipped winter here altogether!

ValentinesDay2

So where are my vintage finds?  Well I could not resist these adorable, classic Valentine’s that I found at the antique store for 10cents each- they even have the little signatures on the back!  And that antique library card holder was the perfect holder for them.

ValentinesDay6

ValentinesDay5

And how could I not have a little love waiting for anyone who entered! This little heart found a home in my HomeGoods lantern and the heart nesting dishes were from Pottery Barn about 8 million years ago but I have seen similar ones in there 🙂

ValentinesDay8

So there you have it! My little touches of love in honor of February 14th.  Not a lot but just enough to get us all in the mood… to not tackle and throw things at each other’s heads… cause I have boys… that’s what we do.

xoxo

There are several truths about HomeGoods that I think we all need to acknowledge.  Feelings that transpire just before, during, and after a shopping trip there are real and it’s time we just get it all out there!

Let’s just walk through the whole experience.  As you make the drive to HomeGoods you go over what you are looking for and vow to only look for said items.  Curtains… that’s it… you need curtains.

HomeGoods

You pull in to park and the anxiety starts to build immediately.  You see them.  People are coming out with big bags and you instantly fear that they have gotten all the amazing things!

IMG_5212

Now your blood is pumping and you gotta get in there before one more fabulous thing is gone!  But all that excitement and the fact that you’ve had children makes you realize that you need a potty break before you can start shopping.  Your brain is on overload… you’ve got to go in and force yourself past all the isles because if you start finding things and put them in your cart, you face the reality that while you are in the restroom someone could grab them!

Okay, you had your potty break and have attained a cart that does not have a squeaky wheel.  That would be too distracting.  It’s go time- time to focus! Knowing the map of the store in your head will be key and prioritizing those sections will help keep you from getting distracted and possibly missing an isle.  Lamps, Household Accessories, Pillows, Furniture, Bedding, and Kitchen.

Everything you see will cause you to question your home decor and style.  EVERYTHING.  You will suddenly feel compelled to possibly decorate monochromatic…

IMG_5219

Or add in more metallic pieces…

IMG_5217And themes! what about all the themes… I like photography… do I need a faux antique camera?

IMG_5220

Should we be going more nautical?! My head is spinning.

IMG_5221

Lucite.  Lucite Lamps.  Lucite Letters.  Lucite Chairs (got some recently… couldn’t help it).  Where can we put all the Lucite?!

IMG_5229

The sidetracking (that’s a word) can get pretty serious.  Oh are those Moscow Mule cups? Oprah loves those… I love Oprah… I must love and need Moscow Mule cups.

IMG_5233

There are going to be times during the trip that can throw you.  Sometimes it’s the sheer amount of people in there who seem to be blocking your path to cute things at every turn… stay strong.  Sometimes this happens…

IMG_5225

Just breath.  You will never know what was there and you’ve got to just move on.

And don’t even get me started on the pillows.  I’m not gonna tell you that you don’t need more pillows.  I would be the biggest hypocrite of all time.  Buy ALL the pillows!

Your cart is now filled with All The Things and as you casually stroll through the isles just one more time to be safe, you realize that 5hrs has just passed and it is time to pick up your children!

IMG_5224

Watch (affiliate link)

It’s time to get in line.  This is going to cause a rush of emotions:  Excitement, Regret, Fear.  There are going to be more things up front… things that you never even knew you needed.  Notebooks, wrapping paper, new iPhone cases, yoga mats, mugs with cute words on them, snacks!

IMG_5234

At this point you are also trying to decide which item or items you can part with should the total already be over your extended limit.  It’s usually the last minute grabs that you can let go with out having too much anxiety.  I like to call them… 2nd Dessert.  Everyone wants one but do you really need it? Notice I didn’t just call it dessert… momma ain’t givin that up.

You determine which credit card to use and justify any monetary amount by saying… Well at least it wasn’t $200! Meaning you round up to the next hundred and congratulate yourself on saving so much money.  And just like that… the whole day is over and it’s time to go home.

What did I get on this particular trip?  Well check them out here and I’ll show you how I’m sprucing things up for Valentine’s Day… all completely necessary purchases of course.

During my master bedroom make over I had hoped to find some pretty white gourd lamps for our nightstand.   Turns out they aren’t  1. Easy to find and 2. Cheap.  Time to dig in and figure out a plan as one does when they are obsessed with finding a cheap gourd lamp!

I found these at HomeGoods, which is always an amazing source for lamps, and decided that they were a good shape and size and had the potential to work as is… but we all know that’s not how I roll.  So she got taped up and spray painted a gorgeous glossy white!

IMG_0791

They came with a very standard lamp shade and of course in my eagerness I only snapped this picture but here is the shade prior to it’s make-over!

IMG_0864

And what you see right there in front of the shade is my new secret weapon! I decided to go dramatic and wanted black shades- but wasn’t going to buy them when I had two perfectly fine ones.  I considered trying to spray paint them, fabric paint, and even rewrapping them in black fabric- but then the wheels turned one more squeak and I thought… what about a screen print ink? It’s for fabric, it has great coverage, and dare I say, affordable?

Speedball Screen Printing Ink is what I went with and I am thrilled with the outcome- especially for $6.  You can find several colors here or I have seen them at local craft stores- just ask for screen printing ink.

IMG_0896

I was unsure at first on how heavily to paint it on- but realized quickly that it goes a long way and using a bit more actually just gave better coverage and then I wouldn’t have to go over spots a second time.  You can see in the above picture that there were a few areas that I had to go back in and paint some more.  (I used a disposable brush so I wouldn’t have to worry about cleanup)

After making sure it was covered well, I decided to add a fun accent.  The fabric on the inside of the shade was covered with thick, smooth paper, so I decided to give it a little pop with Martha Stewart Metallic Silver Paint!

IMG_0824

I debated on gold or silver for awhile and my natural pull was towards gold but because I have more silver accents and cooler colors in the room, I ended up with the silver.  I did two coats and here’s a tip- I did the first coat just painted straight strokes- but the second coat I did in half moon shapes to give a more silver leafed look.

IMG_0849

It doesn’t look pretty until it’s all dry and the light hits it- then you will smile like a fool just like me! And don’t think for a second that you won’t see some other lampshade in my house with a gold interior soon 😉

This was pretty big departure for me and I questioned myself every step of the way but I am so, so happy with how these turned out!

The master bedroom hasn’t ever gotten much love in our home.  It has gotten mini make-overs and been painted, but has continued to be a dumping ground and hodge podge of furniture and bedding.  Over the last six months though, I have watched for sales and finally gotten a few pieces that finally brought it all together for me! Like not just buying something because it was kinda what I wanted- but actually getting the real deal.

Sources will be included at the bottom of the post- and next week I will share tutorials for the lamps (would you believe they were not white and the shades were not black to begin with?!) and the leopard pillow… I made it! Can you tell I’m a little proud of myself?

Without further ado… our refreshed master bedroom!

I am sure y’all have been wondering when I would address the Pineapple trend that has swept the nation.  Well I am here with a special Alert to help you find your Pineapple style 😉

I have started slow with my pineapple infusion with two items:

This ceramic Pineapple that I scored at HomeGoods is now a favorite of mine- loving all the detail but the simplicity because it’s all white.

Pineapple1And this tote bag… well the cuteness speaks for itself! Perfect pool and summer bag!

Screen Shot 2015-06-02 at 1.58.54 PMAnd another option and a bit cheaper, is this cute one!

Screen Shot 2015-06-02 at 1.59.58 PM

Now clothing with pineapples can walk a fine line.  You don’t want to show up to a pool party in Idaho looking like a Hawaiian Princess.  But Lucky has a couple of really cute tops here and here!

PineappleclothesAnd this adorable top!

Screen Shot 2015-06-02 at 2.01.01 PMAnd then my personal favorite- this tiny Pineapple Charm! What a cute little summer gift for a teacher or friend!

Screen Shot 2015-06-02 at 2.09.10 PMSo there you have it! Are you ready to get your Pineapple on?! Or no interest whatsoever?

Have a great day!

fleaThat’s right! All 33 of these amazing bloggers have swapped flea market items and are showing you fun ways to style and repurpose them- and it is all organized by the wonderful Charlotte, at Ciburbanity, who inspires on the daily!

If you have jumped over here from Jen at Migonis Home, Welcome! Jen sent me the most gorgeous swap  items and I was shocked that she found them for under our $15 limit.  This dough bowl and pretty kitchen towel were a challenge only because they don’t need any help!

SwapBowl1This was mostly a styling job for me because I didn’t want to paint something so pretty, but I did add one little accent.  White Sharpie Paint Pen (Affiliate Link) to the rescue! I had them left over from my Powder Room Make-over and wanted to add just a little pop around the edge of the bowl.

SwapBowlI have spring on my brain though… even though there is still snow on the ground here in Dallas (crazy)… so I wanted it to be a pretty spring vignette in preparation for warmer days ahead- and a little tray that is prepared for serving company!

Do you decorate for winter?  It’s two-fold for me, on one hand I am always happy to take all of the holiday decor down and have a clean slate- but on the other hand, I do really love the festive way the house feels with all the lights and special decorations up.

This year I was mildly obsessed with my random disco ball in the entry way for my holiday decor.

I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to it! I mean, every home in the burbs should have a disco ball, am I right?!  So the only logical thing to do was to incorporate it into some winter decor.  Now I don’t typically decorate for winter, but this year I decided to leave a few traces of holiday decor up that weren’t overtly Christmas.

FamilyRoom7I left my book trees up that I did flanking my entertainment center… cause why not?  You can see how I used several Ikea pieces to create our custom Entertainment Center here!

FamilyRoom2And while I confess that I have a hard time editing out ‘things’ in my house- I did pair down the schtuff on the shelves and made it look a bit cleaner.

FamilyRoom13I basically used what I had with the addition to a new wood bowl from HomeGoods that was simply too gorgeous for me to pass up!

FamilyRoomAnd I shopped the house and used my beach wood branch.

FamilyRoom21The mantle is always my arch decorating nemesis… Always.  It sucks the decorating spirit right out of me!!  For whatever reason I always stand back and think… it’s missing something.  My headstone will say:  Amazing Daughter, Wife, Mother, and Mediocre Mantle Decorator.

FamilyRoom15I wanted it to be simple- but also bring some of the colors from my beloved rug up- so the navy clock and oil painting helped combine my love of an eclectic mix!

FamilyRoom20And some of my favorite details in the room…. A picture of my Mom and Dad…

FamilyRoom14My favorite HomeGoods tray with the Nate Berkus for Target Angel tray and fun Target pillows in the background!

FamilyRoom16and our growing collection of seashells… I am desperately ready to add to them!

FamilyRoom18So let us all take one long last look at our clean family room… it might only last this way another 2 seconds…  but at least the pretty things I have in here make me smile even through the clutter:)

Here’s an easy picture you can PIN to come back for sources later!

Hope you are having a wonderful day!
